My Busy Days Blog!
How did your family spend Memorial Day this year? We did something new and different; we actually went to a Memorial Day service! As I added it to the Events Calendar of activities for My Busy Days , I thought, that sure would be a great thing to do - but never imagined we would follow through. Upon arrival, we were immediately glad we made it. The service was set up to honor the fallen soldiers of Irvine. They had posters with each soldier’s story on it for everyone to read. They described their career paths, their families, their hopes and dreams and even how they were tragically killed. Just reading through how each of these brave men died for us made my normal Memorial Day activities (pool, bbq) seem silly and trivial. Some of the men were only 20 years old.
It really hit home for me when I saw large families all wearing T-shirts with their fallen soldiers picture on them bravely attending the service. I realized how oblivious I am about what is going on in my own community. They proceeded to give a service to honor each of these men individually with flags and music that was very moving. Of course, in the end we had to leave early because the kids couldn’t sit still too long but nonetheless, it affected me in a deep and memorable way. I read a Gallup poll that said only 28% of Americans even know what Memorial Day is for!! If was very enriching to not only know what it is for but stop and commemorate it! If you missed out on Memorial Day, make sure to find an event to attend for the Fourth of July. Click on the following link for some suggestions in Orange County: Fourth of July Activities
